The battles take place in real time, while during the turns you have control over the economy, military and technological development, and the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Each of them has its own units, individual abilities, and dedicated buildings. The game features ten factions from representing five different cultures. The player’s adventure begins in 878 starting with the Battle of Edington (also called the battle of Ethandun), which led to the by King Alfred the Great to victory over the Great Heathen Army. The Danes led by King Guthrum were escaping, but the clash eventually ended with their surrender, acceptance of the Christian faith and their settlement on the territory of Britain. The short-lived peace quickly turned into a series of riots aimed at taking over the British Isles by the kings of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The conflict was additionally fueled by the ambitions of the Nords, who also took part in the fight for domination over the whole area.
